Lagos clusters

Lagos is a multifaceted metropolis, home to close to 20 million dwellers on barely 2,000 sqm. Full of diversity in terms of neighbourhoods and people living among them, it’s very difficult to synthetize the presentation of Lagos in one short article. However, let’s have a look at the big cluster:  The Islands, Mainland.

THE ISLANDS

The Islands are Lagos’ core commercial and trading hubs and include most of the city’s top-end residential, hotel and leisure areas where most upper middle class reside or work. These Islands are separated from the Mainland by the main channel draining the lagoon into the Atlantic ocean, which forms Lagos Harbour. They are also separated from each other by creeks of varying sizes and are connected to Lagos Island by bridges.

MAINLAND

MAINLAND

The Mainland holds a greater percentage of inhabitants and industries. It’s the administrative heart of Lagos, housing the State Government, the industrial heart with several factories in Ikeja and also have the biggest connecting infrastructure, namely:
- Nigeria’s biggest port (Apapa)
- Nigeria’s biggest airpot (Murtala Mohamed Airport)
- The several roads that connect Lagos to Nigeria’s hinterland

Lagos Mainland districts include Ebute-Meta, Surulere (site of two stadiums and National theater), Yaba (location of the University of Lagos) and Ikeja, site of Murtala Muhammed International Airport and capital of Lagos State.

Greater Lagos represent areas that are not included in Lagos Metropolitan Area. Greater Lagos includes Mushin, Maryland, Somolu, Oshodi, Oworonsoki, Isolo, Ikotun, Agege, Iju Ishaga, Egbeda, Ketu, Bariga, Ipaja, and Ejigbo.
